Tip of the Week #2: Understanding Coral Light Requirements!

Different corals thrive under different lighting intensities (measured in PAR—Photosynthetically Active Radiation). By knowing your coral’s needs, you can position them in areas of the tank with suitable light, promoting better health, colour, and growth.

General PAR Guidelines:

  • SPS (Small Polyp Stony Corals): 150–400+ PAR

  • LPS (Large Polyp Stony Corals): 75–250 PAR

  • Softies (Soft Corals): 0–125 PAR

Key Takeaways:

Placement matters: Position high-light corals near the surface or under the strongest lighting, while low-light species can thrive in shaded or peripheral areas.

Monitor and adjust: Use a PAR meter or reliable references to confirm your corals are getting the right amount of light.

Acclimate new corals: Sudden exposure to intense lighting can lead to stress or bleaching, so introduce them gradually to brighter spots if needed.
